Giselle: Artistic and Racy or Just Racist?

Take a look.

What do you think?

  1. Racist. They're totally playing on "savage man" imagery.

  2. The racism in the images is blatantly obvious. Although it's implicit in all similar fashion shoots anyway. It would be very refreshing to see people point out all the other pictures where those black bodies are implied, even if they're not there. I mean, we're talking fashion shoots, who makes most clothes in the first place?

In fact, if the clothes weren't the embodiment of what's symbolised in that picture, they wouldn't have so much value to us as consumers. We wouldn't get a thrill from buying them. That's exactly what we mean by "nice things".

Only, there's no simple lifestyle choice or boycott that will remedy that solution, so it's easier to attack its manifestations instead.

(That said, it might be good if the fashion industry itself was a little more uncomfortable with its own implicit racism, as well - I thought for a minute the photographer might have been making a point, but on second thoughts the only point I can see being made there is "phwoooooaaaar!").

Hey there,
Before you leave a comment, just remember two things:
1. You are taking responsibility for a public comment
2. Anything that resembles racism, homophobia, classism, ableism, or anything based from religion, citizenship, or ethnic bias - don't bother commenting, you'll be deleted.
